Basic Research
Under the supervision of senior research scientist Dr Barbara Rose, our basic research program has focused on the role of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancers, particularly tonsil cancer. HPV, the common wart virus, is also known to have a role in cervix cancer in women.
We are also studying the genetics of salivary gland cancer.
Clinical Research
The following studies are among the numerous clinical research projects that are currently being undertaken:
• The influence of tumour thickness in cancers of the oral cavity (mouth);
• The outcome of patients following total laryngectomy (removal of the voice box) for cancer;
• The treatment of mouth cancer when tumour involves the mandible (jaw bone);
• The effectiveness of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy in treating larynx (throat) cancer, with the aim of preserving the voice box;
• The treatment of benign parotid (salivary gland) tumours;
• A comparison of the behaviour of primary and secondary parotid gland cancers.
• The role of PET imaging in diagnosis and staging of head and neck cancers.
• Quality of Life and Nutritional Outcomes in head and neck cancer patients.
