He subsequently undertook a 12-month Fellowship in Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Hong Kong, followed by a two-year Fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, under the auspices of the American Head & Neck Society. Returning in mid 1999, he was appointed to the Department of Head & Neck Surgery of the Central Sydney Area Health Service and also resumed his association with the Sydney Melanoma Unit.

With a principle clinical focus in Head & Neck Oncology, Dr Shannon is involved with the comprehensive management of mucosal malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract, melanoma and cutaneous malignancy, salivary gland diseases, and surgery for thyroid and parathyroid diseases. Research interests include organ preservation protocols, the use of regional chemotherapy for advanced head and neck cancers and sentinel node biopsy for melanoma of the head and neck. This is combined with a strong interest in teaching at all levels of medical training.

Dr Shannon is also the Director of the Head and Neck Fellowship programme at RPA.

Dr Shannon is happily married and likes to spend time with his family as well as kayaking and playing the violin.

Dr Anthony Clifford, MBBS, FRACS
Head of Head and Neck Department
Anthony was born in 1957, the son of a surgeon working for rural people in the small African country of Lesotho. Anthony graduated from both dentistry and medicine at Sydney University and in 1991 completed specialist training in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Two one-year overseas head & neck oncology fellowships followed. These were at St Michael's Hospital in Toronto (Canada) and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore (USA).  

Anthony has been a part of the Head & Neck Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital since 1994. His dental and otolaryngology background have resulted in a strong interest in oral and laryngeal pathology. Other areas of interest include the management of salivary gland tumours and paranasal sinus malignancy.

Anthony has a strong commitment to strive to provide patient care of the highest possible standard. Dr Clifford is the Head of the Head and Neck Department at RPA and his interests outside medicine include playing with his children, cycling and cabinet making.

Dr Jonathan Clark, MBBS (Hons), BSc,  FRACS
Head of the Fellowship Program
Jonathan worked as an advanced surgical trainee at RPA in 2003 and in 2006 returned to RPA to join the staff at the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute.  In 2004-2005, Jonathan completed a two year American Head and Neck Society Fellowship with the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Toronto, Canada. 

During his time in Canada, Jonathan has gained considerable experience and interest in microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects. His January 2006  VMO appointment spans across the Sydney South West Area Health Service to include both RPA and Liverpool hospitals. Jonathan has also been awarded a Cancer Institute NSW Fellowship. Jonathan's recreational interests include gardening with his son, Harrison and spending time with his newborn baby, Sebastian.
